TV and Movies

I recently read that the movies that make the most money have patriotism and traditional values as part of the story line. I was surprised. Maybe we aren’t as different as I thought! There is even an award for them.  As I thought about it; most of the TV and movies we watch fit in that category.  Here's a few examples:

For Christmas, we got the complete set of Get Smart. We have really enjoyed watching them. The Cone of Silence and the Craw!  Hysterical! Get the original series. They are the best!

We have all the Harry Potter movies. I love that even though Harry isn’t perfect, he still triumphs over evil.

We also watch NCIS. I love how the military is shown in a positive light and the bad guy always gets caught.

We also enjoy watching the History channel. Seeing what lead up to different big events in history is really interesting. There was a great series called The Revolution which really made the revolutionary war real.

I’m sure the reason this type of movie makes money is most people like characters they can relate to. Most people like the good guy to win and the bad guy to get caught. They like characters who are trying the best they can to make their life better (just like most people). Maybe someday Hollywood will get the message!

I saw this on Pinterest and thought I can make that and make it for cheap!

I went to the website for the directions and there were just more pictures so here’s what I did.

I gathered my supplies (get the Diet Coke first):

Felt (Wal.mart only 20 cents each!)

Embroidery floss (I had this)

Copy paper (I had this too)

Needle

Buttons

Stuffing (I used bits of felt and shredded paper)

Cut heart patterns out of the copy paper. Trace the pattern on the felt. I cut both hearts out at once (to be sure they would match).

Add decorations to the top heart (buttons, stars, etc).

Sew the hearts together (I used a blanket stitch). Leave an open side for stuffing.
Stuff the heart and sew it shut!

I made three and they were quick and super easy.

Now I can say I really have made something I found on Pinterest!

Can you belive it? It seems so early! (This is not a picture of the actual flowers. I didn't want to be that weird person and we don't have daffodils in our yard.)

Law and Order**

Last week I had jury duty (or as it was called in the letter jury service). Even though I read the letter (several times!!!); I really wasn’t prepared for it to last all week. We showed up the first day and waited in a room. There were about 60 people. We watched a video about what everyone does in the court room, got sworn in (all at the same time) and then went to the courtroom.

They had everyone’s name in a jar and drew them out. Mine was drawn out. I sat in a juror seat and answered the questions. The lawyers didn’t like me and I had to sit in the rejected juror section. Eventually, the lawyers had a group of jurors they all liked and we were allowed to leave. We all raced for the door. Just as we got to the elevator, we were called back. Turns out, we had to come back the next day! The first case wasn’t going to last too long so, we had to we had to come back for the next case.  

We showed up the next day and we waited. . . and waited. (Turned out the first case took longer than expected.) Finally, we went into the courtroom. This time we didn’t get a jury the lawyers liked before 5:00 so we had to come back THE NEXT DAY!!! (Most of us would have been willing to stay a little longer if it meant we could avoid coming back!) We all showed up the third day and I got to sit in a juror seat again. They still didn’t like me (not that I was disappointed in ANY WAY!!) and I had to go sit with the other rejected jurors. Finally they had a jury all the lawyers liked and we were let go. This time everyone RAN for the exits. Most did not wait for the elevator and took the stairs. We didn’t want to take a chance of getting called back.

The main thing that surprised me was how slow everything went. There was lots of waiting and wondering what was going on and how long things would take. I was also surprised at how I felt being there. It felt very uncomfortable and disconcerting. Very surprising!
